THE LOST ART
A Structured Framework
How is this different from traditional coaching?
Traditional coaching tends to focus almost entirely on technique. This programme pays more attention to the performance aspects, providing a platform to learn both the essential technical and mental skills to empower you to perform under pressure.
How does this apply to business or leadership?
Although the work is explored through golf, the underlying principles are equally relevant to business and leadership. Clarity of thought, quality of attention and the ability to respond effectively under pressure are central to performance in any role. As a result, many individuals find that the benefits extend well beyond the golf course.
How much time is required?
You will meet with Gary virtually once or twice a month. In addition, there may be opportunities to work on your performance between sessions, particularly through video review. The intention is to integrate this work into your existing routine, rather than disrupt it. The online format allows for a more consistent and efficient process. It enables regular contact without the need for travel, while ensuring that the work is applied directly within your normal playing and working environment, rather than in isolated sessions.
Is this a replacement for my current golf coach?
Not necessarily. If you are making fantastic progress with the technical work you are doing with your existing coach, please carry on. However, if you feel a more holistic approach would be beneficial, then please get in touch.
Is this suitable for all levels of golfer?
No. This work is designed for individuals who are already committed to the game and take their performance seriously. It is most appropriate for those who have an established level of experience, and who recognise that continued improvement requires more than technical development alone.
Based at Archerfield Links on Scotland’s Golf Coast, Gary Nicol is widely regarded as one of the game’s most respected coaches, working with golfers of all standards, from committed amateurs to multiple DP World Tour winners and Ryder Cup players.
With over 35 years of experience, and 16 years coaching full time on the DP World Tour, his work has consistently focused on performance rather than the pursuit of technical perfection. Gary’s philosophy is grounded in the understanding that playing golf requires the ability to create a variety of different shots, not simply repeat a “perfect” swing. In his view, the swing is not the skill. The real skill lies in creating the appropriate shot, at the appropriate time, with clarity and commitment.
Gary’s approach combines clear and practical technical guidance with a strong emphasis on how individuals think, make decisions and respond under pressure. His work has become known for bridging the gap between traditional coaching and modern performance thinking.
As co-author, alongside Karl Morris, of the internationally bestselling Lost Art of Golf series, Gary has been at the forefront of a shift in how the game is understood and taught. Through his coaching, writing and mentoring, he continues to help golfers develop a more effective and enjoyable relationship with the game, and a deeper understanding of their own performance.
Gary is a strong advocate of what he believes are the “Mental Game Big 3” - Intention, Attention and Attitude which are not only applicable to golf but also to business and life in general.
